TOPS at SPAR Heritage Day Digital Campaign

I collaborated with Senior Designer Zandri Jackson to create a vibrant digital campaign for Heritage Day. We blended Ndebele-inspired patterns with South African sports colours to celebrate the holiday, driving engagement and boosting sales with culturally relevant designs and animations.

The Challenge

TOPS at SPAR aimed to celebrate South Africa’s Heritage Day by promoting meal pairings with drinks, intending to boost in-store sales. The challenge was to create a vibrant and culturally relevant digital campaign that resonated with South Africans and captured the essence of the holiday.

The Process

Research: Together with Zandri, we delved into South African heritage, drawing inspiration from the Ndebele tribe’s rich patterns and the green and gold colours prominent in South African sports teams. We explored how these elements could be woven into a cohesive visual identity for the campaign.

Concept Development: We brainstormed and sketched out ideas, focusing on the theme of unity and celebration. We aimed to create designs that were not only visually appealing but also meaningful in representing South African culture.

Design & Animation: Using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, we developed a series of social media posts and website banners. The designs featured bold patterns, vibrant colours, and dynamic compositions. I then animated these elements in After Effects, adding motion to bring the campaign to life.

Iterations: Based on client feedback, we made adjustments to ensure the messaging was clear and the visuals were engaging.

The final campaign consisted of visually striking social media posts and website banners that seamlessly integrated cultural elements with the brand’s identity. The use of Ndebele-inspired patterns and South African sports colours helped create a strong connection with the audience, while the tar background added a modern touch. The animations added an extra layer of engagement, drawing viewers’ attention and enhancing the overall impact. The campaign was well-received, successfully increasing engagement on social media platforms and driving more traffic to the website. The combination of culturally relevant design and effective animation helped TOPS at SPAR stand out during the Heritage Day celebrations, contributing to a noticeable boost in sales and customer interaction during the promotional period.

This project was an invaluable experience in combining cultural relevance with brand identity. Working on the Heritage Day campaign allowed me to explore the deep cultural roots of South Africa and translate that into a visual language that resonated with a broad audience. The collaboration with Zandri was particularly enriching, as it brought diverse perspectives into the design process, leading to a more refined final product.
